Three Health Effects of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition in which an individual experiences intermittent sleep because of an interrupted breathing pattern and it can affect anyone of any age. Snoring is one sign of the condition that is typically seen, though it is not a sure way to determine if someone has sleep apnea or not.

Many people deal with sleep apnea but few consider it a major health risk. Left untreated, however, this seemingly simple issue can grow into a serious health concern that affects many other parts of the body. This is because when someone suffers from a lack of oxygen throughout the night, such as is the case with sleep apnea, the body is left without enough oxygen and may have side effects as a result.

Here are three of the most common health effects that sleep apnea can lead to:

1.       Depression   The amount of hours and the quality of someone’s sleep has a major influence on that person’s mental health and overall well-being. Therefore, if a person’s sleep is disrupted several hundred times per night and they are not getting the rest they need, they may be more likely to suffer from depression and a variety of other emotional and mental health issues.

2.       Headaches   Headaches are another common result of sleep apnea. Someone who does not sleep well during the night may often experience headaches and even migraines during the day as a result of their poor rest.

3.       Stroke and Heart Issues   Because someone with sleep apnea is not getting properly oxygenated, this can lead to very serious heart concerns, such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure and heart attacks.
